Assignment #9

The Iliad

It all started with the marriage between Thetis, a sea goddess, and Peleus. The couple did not invite Eris, the goddess of discord to their wedding, and she got very angry. Eris crashed the wedding reception, and as her gift, she put down one golden apple on the table and said the apple belonged to whomever was the fairest in the room. Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite all reached for the apple. Since they could not decide whom among them was the fairest, they had a judge, the handsome mortal Paris determine who was the fairest. In return for deeming each goddess the fairest, they all bribed him. Athena promised Paris wealth, Hera promised him power, and Aphrodite promised him the most beautiful women in the world. Paris chose Aphrodite, and Paris wanted Helen, who was already married to the Greek, Menelaus who ruled Sparta. Paris then took off for Sparta to take Helen. Paris successfully takes Helen back to Troy with him. Menelaus of course wants his wife back, so they Trojan war begins.
Officials came to my kingdom Ithaca in search of soldiers to fight in Troy. I tries to avoid the war by pretending I was crazy, but that eventually failed. I set off to Troy with my men and sailed for two days. When reached Troy, I was used more as a adviser than a combat soldier. Achilles, one of our best soldiers defeated the Trojan warrior Hector. Paris killed Achilles by shooting an arrow in his heel. After Paris was killed with Hercules bow, Helen married his brother, Deiphobus. Helena later betrayed him to Menelaus. The Greeks fought for ten years. I came up with a plan known as the Trojan Horse.
I ordered the great artist Epeius to build a huge hollow wooden horse. The most skilled warriors hid inside the horse. To trick the Trojans into thinking that is Greeks had retreated, all the ships and Greeks sailed away. One Greek stayed behind, Sinon, who pretended to be angry with the rest of the Greeks for sailing away and deserting him. He assured The Trojans the wooden horse was safe to take into the walls of Troy. The two prophet twins,  Laocoon and Cassandra, argued againts taking the horse in, but no one listened to them. Later that night when the Trojans were asleep and totally drunk from celebrating there victory, we crept out with the help of Athena, and we slaughtered the Trojans. Helen and Menelaus went back to Sparta where they lived happily until their deaths.

Assignment #7

For the climax of the Trojan war, I would say is when I came up with, and beautifully executed the whole Trojan Horse hoax. I am smart, but I probably would have never though of this cunning plan without the help of Athena, or being the great-grandchild of Hermes. I ordered the great artist Epeius to build a huge hollow wooden horse. To trick the Trojans into thinking that is Greeks had retreated, All the ships and Greeks except for a select few (me included) sailed away, and back to there own land. One Greek stayed behind, Sinon, who pretended to be angry with the rest of the Greeks for sailing away deserting him assured that the wooden horse was safe to take in to the walls of Troy. The two prophet twins,  Laocoon and Cassandra, argued agents taking the horse in, but they were overlooked. Later that night when the Trojans were asleep and totally drunk from celebrating there victory, Sinon let us out of the horse, and we slaughtered the Trojans.

Assignment #6

The main conflict in the Iliad is when Paris, prince of Troy takes Helen who is married to the Greek king, Menelaus. Of course, when Menelaus learned of his wife's capture, he wanted her back, starting the Trojan war.

The conflict goes even deeper, to when Paris decides to take Helen as his bride. It all started with the marrage between Thetis, a sea goddess, and Peleus. The couple did not invite Eris, the goddess of discord, and she got very angry. She crashed the wedding and as her gift, she put down one golden apple on the table and said that the apple belonged to whomever was the fairest. Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite all reached for the apple. Since they could not decide whom among them was the fairest, they had a judge, the mortal Paris because lots of women desired him. In return for deeming each goddess the fairest, they all bribed him. Athena promised Paris wealth, Hera promised him power, and Aphrodite promised him the most beautiful women in the world. Paris chose Aphrodite, and Aphrodite told him Helen would be his wife. Paris then took off for Sparta to take Helen.

Assignment #5

There are many characters in the Iliad. A few key people that took part in the Trojan war are Helen of Troy, Achilles, Paris, Hector, and Menelaus.

Helen Of Troy
Helen was considered the most beautiful women in the whole world. Helen did not make good choices, she basically started the Trojan war when Paris stole/seduced her from her husband Menelaus, and took her to Troy.

Achilles
Achilles was a very noble Greek warrior. His most accomplishing feat was killing the great warrior Hector outside the gates of Troy. Achilles was not invincible, he was killed when Paris shot him in the ankle with an arrow. Achilles was very respectable, and the best Greek soldier.

Paris
Paris, also the brother of the great warrior Hector, and is very cowardly and selfish. He took Helen, Queen of Sparta, who was already married, and went off to Troy, the setting of the Trojan war. His selfishness caused a ten year war, which he eventually lost. He was not considered a great warrior, but did manage to kill Achilles.

Hector
Hector was the Trojan version of Achilles. Despite his commanding presence in battle, Hector was actually a good natured person. He had a family whom he loved very much. I guess Hector was sort of a martyr, killing so many Greeks in the war, but claiming to love peace. Hector was the prince of Troy.

Menelaus
Menelaus was the King of Sparta, and was married to Helen of Troy, until Paris stole her. He was also a great leader in the Trojan war. Menelaus was the leader of my people, since he was the king, and had a personal dispute with the Trojans (because the prince of Troy stole his beautiful wife.)
